Exterior Wash Routines
A methodical approach to vehicle exterior maintenance designed to help clean efficiently while minimizing the risk of wash-induced marring.
The Importance of Safe Washing
Routine washing is the foundation of vehicle care. However, incorrect techniques can introduce fine scratches and swirl marks into the clear coat. At storiezdigst, we emphasize careful, sequential washing processes that respect the delicate nature of modern automotive paint systems.
The Pre-Wash Stage
Before any physical contact is made with the vehicle, removing loose dirt and grit is vital. This typically involves a thorough rinse followed by the application of a dedicated pre-wash foam or citrus cleaner. Allowing these products to dwell helps to break down surface tension, enabling heavier soiling to be rinsed away safely.
The Contact Wash
A proper contact wash should utilize a multi-bucket method—commonly separating the wash solution from the rinse water to prevent dirt from being reapplied to the vehicle. We advocate for the use of high-quality microfiber or lambswool wash mitts rather than traditional sponges, as these materials can draw dirt particles away from the surface of the paint.
Washing should proceed from the top of the vehicle downwards, as lower panels tend to accumulate the highest concentration of road grime.
Wheels and Arches
Wheels often require specialized care due to brake dust accumulation and road tar. Dedicated wheel buckets, varied brushes, and pH-balanced or fallout-removing wheel cleaners can help maintain alloy finishes. Wheel arches and tires also require focused cleaning to remove embedded dirt and prepare rubber surfaces for eventual conditioning.
Safe Drying Methods
Drying is another stage where clear coat damage frequently occurs. We recommend approaches that minimize physical friction. This can include using deep-pile microfiber drying towels paired with drying aids (quick detailers), or utilizing filtered forced-air blowers to safely remove water from intricate areas, grilles, and mirrors.
Note: Recommendations vary based on usage and existing vehicle condition. No single method guarantees the complete prevention of surface wear.
